I had used tesselation in previous work, but mainly as a way of building up a field of information. With this piece I wanted to impose an order to that field. I chose a fleur-de-lis-type shape that would: a- tesselate easily enough that forms could interlock with each other and b- would fit snugly and interweave with each other in such a way as to obscure the tile seams.
I took digital ‘proofs’ as I went along, to see if I was making a viable tile.

The actual form of the final piece was only finalised well into the project. The above approach would have accentuated the shape of the tile and created an interesting border, but I wanted to sidestep problems of presentation by having a framed image. It ended up being a challenge to keep the integrity of the rectangle, but I think this approach gives equal weight to the “Field of Noise” and the individual components of the piece.
